Dolores Tutt bought a baked goods shop and has started a second life for herself in her retirement, moving up to the small mountain community of Sugar Pine Station. For a small village located on a backwoods road on the way to Yosemite National Park, there sure are some mysterious, quirky residents there.
We meet Mack, the cat who came with the Donut Hut who quickly makes himself an indispensable part of her life. Sweet and surly at times, this mrrowing feline seems to have a knack of being in the right place at the right time. Somehow he’s also able to help Dolly with her business problems. Is Mack just a really smart cat or is there more to him than meets the eye?
Then there’s Emilio Aguilera, an elderly priest who becomes a regular customer who can spin quite a charming yarn. How come he seems to know a lot more than Dolly does about the history of the town and her shop in particular? And what’s his history with Mack anyway?
Finally, we meet Donovan Huckly, a man with multiple jobs in the town, such as Animal Control Officer & Health Inspector, who seems to be continually harassing Dolly about one thing or another, trying to shut her shop down. Why does he keep nosing around her business? Is he looking for something?
It all starts when Dolly finds some handwritten recipe cards with some spices that she doesn’t recognize. When she decided to try them out, along with some of these unknown spices, she gets more than she bargained for with quite unexpected results. From here on in, the mysteries start to deepen and we start to wonder about the what’s really going on here in this little hamlet.
When you mix all of these different ingredients together, you get a charming story that goes in some pleasantly unexpected directions as it neatly resolves the intriguing, fun questions that it posed. It’s entertaining, congenial and not overly complicated, the very definition of a cozy mystery. Along the way, you meet all sorts of other fun characters and encounter situations that just made me laugh and smile. The end is quite a surprise, deftly tying up the loose ends and also being very appropriate for the story that unfolds here.
Afterward, I realized that the story gave me warm fuzzy feelings the whole way through. For me, it weaved an engaging, delightful story that kept me interested in what happened next while also capturing my imagination with its playful, breezy style. It’s a purr-fectly fun, whimsical and cozy “tail”!
P.S. Sorry for the cat puns, I just couldn’t resist. Mrrow. 🙂
